40 of the best outfits i wore this year
brand of the year, best ensemble, trendiest new purchase & other awards
I’ve always had a basal interest in fashion. The Devil Wears Prada is one my favorite movies, I know the correct way to pronounce Givenchy, and the name Alexander McQueen means something to me. My iCloud photo storage is inundated with screenshots of high fashion collections in February and September. Now I recognize recent designer collections on the red carpet. I’ve witnessed the recent rebirth of Tory Burch, the attempted gen-z-ification of Coach, and the never ending musical chairs of European creative directors.
Realistically, I started paying attention to all of this in the hopes that it would help build my personal style. And sure, I got ideas: wearing a blazer as a top (Ulla Johnson FW23), ballet inspired styling (Sandy Liang SS23), graphic tee + cardigan + blazer combo (Brandon Maxwell SS23), and how to stylishly execute the canadian tuxedo (3.1 Phillip Lim SS24).
Ideas can only take you so far. You’re gonna need to get dressed. 2023 was the year I started getting dressed. Last August, I documented my process for 30 consecutive days and it completely changed how I approach clothing.
Maybe that’s dramatic. Maybe Jemima Kirke would tell me I’m thinking about myself too much. But, I rediscovered pieces that had been banished to the depths of my storage bins. Experimenting with different layering and color combinations expanded my comfort zone.
I could feel myself getting bored and running out of ideas towards the end of the month. So I turned to accessories, new hair styles, and cohesive makeup. In 2023, I mastered the style trifecta (the interplay of hair, makeup and clothing to create an ensemble).
I learned how to get dressed. Then, I wanted to love getting dressed.
2024 was the year of refinement. I knew what silhouettes I liked, what trends I wanted to try, and what new pieces I wanted to add to my wardrobe. Some muscle memory was nice to have on reserve; I rewore a ton of my favorite outfits. And let the record show, certified outfit repeaters are the baddest b*tches out there.
Fun tidbit: my favorite outfits in 2024 often intersected with my favorite makeup looks. Noted.
Here we are in December 2024 and I can count the number of times I’ve said “I have nothing to wear!!!!!” on one hand. HUGE. MAJOR. COLOSSAL. Today, I’m sharing my 40 of my best outfits from the year. Let’s do ittttt.
This is a long one — it’s gonna get chopped by your email provider. View the whole post on desktop or in the substack app. This post contains affiliate links.
